St. Thomas This Winter: Why December to April Is the Best Time to Go

Warm, dry and no passport needed: a winter escape to St. Thomas

When it's cold and gray back home, St. Thomas is at its best. Winter is the U.S. Virgin Islands' high season for good reason: warm, dry, breezy days and calm evenings, and you don't need a passport to get here from the mainland.

Why winter works

  • The weather: December through April is the drier part of the year, with steady trade winds and daytime highs that usually sit in the low to mid 80s °F. Evenings on the balcony are perfect.
  • Outside hurricane season: the Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, so a winter trip sits comfortably outside it.
  • Easy to get to: St. Thomas is a U.S. territory. U.S. citizens flying from the mainland just need a government-issued ID, and there are direct flights from several East Coast cities.

What to plan around

  • Book early for the holidays: Christmas, New Year's and the February and spring-break weeks fill up first, for flights and for places to stay.
  • St. Thomas Carnival: the 2027 Carnival runs April 24 to May 1, with the J'ouvert street dance, parades, a food fair and the carnival village. A fun way to stretch your winter trip into spring.
  • Rent a car: it's the easiest way to explore the island. Remember to drive on the left.

A winter day on the East End

  • Morning: coffee on the balcony, then snorkel at Sapphire Beach or Secret Harbor, both a short drive away.
  • Afternoon: catch the ferry from Red Hook to Cruz Bay on St. John for its national park beaches. Our St. John day trip guide has the details.
  • Evening: dinner and drinks in Red Hook, then back to the condo to listen to the waves.

Where to stay

Our oceanfront one-bedroom condo at Cabrita Point sits right on the water on the quiet East End, minutes from Red Hook. It has a private ocean-view balcony, air conditioning and a full kitchen. See the St. Thomas condo, check winter dates and book direct with us for our best rates.
